TEST 1 QUESTIONS and INSTRUCTIONS

Essay questions TEST 1

Please answer as completely as possible. You are responsible for answering 2 of the questions below. Each answer is limited to 1.5 single spaced page, standard 12 point font. PLEASE INDICATE the question number you are answering.

You will be graded on your understanding of the materials, ability to support your argument and the analytical depth of your answers.

ESSAY QUESTIONS

1. Kaplan sees a coming anarchy based on the conflict over natural resources –at the time he wrote this essay, he claimed that this concern largely fell on deaf ears within the policy making circles of the developed world. Is this still the case? Why or why not? Please support your assertion with examples from the book, class discussion, or outside sources. (All outside sources must be cited)

2. A significant portion of the class discussion has centered around realism and idealism in terms of US intervention in international affairs and/or other countries. Select an example from the book, class discussion or outside readings and defend US involvement (or lack of involvement) in both realist terms, and idealist terms. Then outline why each of these theories fail to fully explain the involvement level.

3. Kaplan often relies on historical precedent to explain our current situation. Considering that this book was written 10 years ago, how accurate has he been at outlining conditions we see today? Is it appropriate to look to the past to try to understand the future with regard changing global conditions? Support your answers drawing on examples from the book, class discussion and outside reading to support your argument.
